Snow White: A Graphic Novel

Snow White: A Graphic Novel

By: Matt Phelan

Overview:

It is 1928, and the glitz and glam of show business in pre-Depression era New York City is in full swing. The lights are bright for the financiers and those who entertain them, and life seems good in the big city.

But in one house, a little girl named Samantha is sent away by her cold, ruthless stepmother, and she does not return until it's too late. The market has crashed, her father is gone, and her stepmother is more desperate for wealth and attention than ever.

With a moody dramatic feel reminiscent of film noir, acclaimed graphic novelist Matt Phelan had retold a well-known fairy tale in a wholly new way, showcasing the Depression era's cultural dynamism and vivid personalities, both those who are pure of heart and those who are pure evil.

I have always loved a good graphic novel, mainly because I could read them with in a day. However when I picked this newly acquired book on the shelf of my library, I was hooked from the minute that I turned the first page. The graphics of the novel were exquisite and told a classic story from a whole new point of view. A lot of us wonder what it would have been like if all of the classic princesses were in a realistic background. Well author Matt Phelan has done just that, in light of the new storytelling I would hope that other authors and graphic novelists will take the advantage and make their own story and put there own twist on a classic fairy tail.

In spite of reading, the book was a quick read and I manged to still uphold my record and finished the book with in a day. The book was extremely deep and moving, and even though it had a realistic background, there was still some cases where the fairy tail that we all know and love can be seen with the impossible things. (AKA: a prince kissing Snow White and she wakes up, after a poisoning.)

The Dog Ray

The Dog Ray

By: Linda Coggin

Synapsis

Daisy, age twelve, has died a swift death in a car accident. She finds herself in the afterworld, which resembles nothing more than a job center. Her soul is being returned to Earth, but not as a human - she's returning as a dog. A dog who is determined to get back to her parents and get back home.

Linda Coggin's incredible novel is by turns funny, poignant, and moving, depicting a nuanced and unique portrait of death, love, grief, and hope that is sure to stay with readers long after the story is is done.

I recently picked up this book on the shelf of my library. I have always been an animal lover. Even though I had enough books already, there was just something about this book that intrigued me. So I picked it up and began to read it. I managed to finish it in a day or so and found the novel absolutely wonderful, it was funny and cute, but also sad. It talked of a girl who has died, however she had unfinished business to do, so she becomes a dog, at first she has a life not so great, but then in due time she begins to wonder what her purpose is that she was sent back for. I won't tell you anymore but that, however I will tell you that I would read it again in a heartbeat.

(Note, this book was an Advanced Reading Copy, it is due to be released in November of 2016)
